Base Set Shadowless vs Unlimited: How to Tell Them Apart

English Base Set was printed three times in 1999, and the three printings are worth wildly different amounts. People routinely sell shadowless cards for unlimited prices because nobody told them there was a difference.

Here’s how to tell in about ten seconds per card.

The three printings, in order

1. 1st Edition — has the 1st Edition stamp. Smallest print run.
2. Shadowless — same plates as 1st Edition, minus the stamp. Still scarce.
3. Unlimited — the mass printing. This is what most people have.

Check 1: the shadow

Look at the right-hand edge of the artwork box — the window the Pokémon picture sits in.

On an unlimited card there is a visible drop shadow along the right side and bottom of that box, giving it a slight 3D lift off the card. On a shadowless card, there isn’t one. The art box sits flat against the card.

This is the check the printing is named after and it’s the most reliable single tell, but confirm it with at least one of the others — lighting can play tricks.

Check 2: the HP colour and font

On shadowless cards, the HP text in the top right is a thinner, lighter red and sits slightly differently. Unlimited HP text is heavier and darker. Put two cards side by side and it’s obvious; alone, it’s a supporting clue rather than proof.

Check 3: overall colour saturation

Shadowless cards look lighter and slightly washed out compared to unlimited. The unlimited run was printed with denser inks. Again — a comparison check, not a standalone one.

Check 4: the date and copyright line

Look at the bottom of the card. Shadowless cards from the early run often carry a 1999 copyright only, while later unlimited printings read 1999-2000. If you see 1999-2000, it’s unlimited, full stop. This one is decisive when present.

Finding the 1st Edition stamp

The stamp is a small black circle to the left of the artwork, roughly level with the bottom of the picture, containing a “1” and the word EDITION beneath it. It is small and easy to miss on a card in a sleeve, and easy to confuse with the set symbol, which sits on the right side under the art.

If a card has the stamp, it is by definition also shadowless — 1st Edition cards were printed before the shadow was added.

Why this matters for what you’re paid

The three printings are three different markets. A buyer who quotes you a single price “for your Base Set holos” without asking which printing they are is either not looking carefully or is hoping you won’t.
